Sometimes you encounter a PC that when you look at the task manager, you go ‘holy cow!’, it’s running on 100% disk usage for a long, long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Believe me, that’s quite normal but solvable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the steps that I did to help bring it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.<\/strong> Press   + R<\/strong> and type devmgmt.msc<\/strong> in the Run<\/em>, hit Enter<\/em> key to open Device Manager<\/em> snap-in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.<\/strong> In the Device Manager<\/em> window, expand IDE ATA\/ATAPI controllers<\/strong> and right click on Standard SATA AHCI Controller<\/strong>, select Properties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.<\/strong> In the property sheet, switch to Driver<\/strong> tab and click Driver Details<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.<\/strong> If the Driver File Details<\/em> window shows storahci.sys<\/strong> driver listed there, it means you\u2019re running inbox driver and hence it is possible to disable MSI<\/em> mode. Click OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.<\/strong> Back on the property sheet, switch to Details<\/strong> tab. Against Property<\/em>, select Device instance path<\/strong> from drop-down and note down<\/em> the Value<\/strong> mentioned there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.<\/strong> Press  + R<\/strong> and put regedit<\/strong> in Run<\/strong> dialog box to open Registry Editor <\/em>(if you\u2019re not familiar with Registry Editor<\/em>, then click here<\/strong><\/a>). Click OK.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. <\/strong>In the Registry Editor<\/em> window, navigate to following registry key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Enum\\PCI\\<AHCI Controller Value>\\Device Parameters\\Interrupt Management\\MessageSignaledInterruptProperties<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n
Substitute <AHCI Controller Value> we got in step 5<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8.<\/strong> In the right pane of MessageSignaledInterruptProperties<\/strong> key, look for the registry DWORD<\/em> (REG_DWORD<\/em>) named MSISupported<\/strong> which should be corresponding to Value<\/em> 1<\/em> as its Data<\/em>. Double click on the DWORD<\/em> to modify its value:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. <\/strong>Finally, set the Value data<\/em> as 0<\/strong> and click OK<\/strong>. Close Registry Editor<\/em> and reboot. After restarting your machine, the 100% disk usage problem should disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
